A great addition to the Country Living Grain Mill.
After careful review , I bought the Country Living grain mill about two months ago. It is extremely well built and made in the USA and does the job very well. As one reviewer pointed out, the mill is top heavy with a small "footprint". This is because it is designed to be bolted to a table or some other work surface. I mounted mine on an eight x twenty four inch piece of 3/4 inch plywood and c- clamped it to a heavy tabletop. Works great. However it does take a fair amount of muscle power to grind fine flour for bread. Although an extension handle is available that is designed to make the chore easier by extending the turning radius, I understand it also results in a longer time to grind the same amount of grain. So, after much consideration, I bit the bullet, so to speak, and bought the motor kit. The kit ships with a generous sized hardwood base that is complete with pre drilled holes and hardware for mounting the mill. The motor assembly is factory mounted on the base board and...
Took a load off.
Our children helped us grind two kinds of flour and corn one Saturday. It takes a long time to grind a product into flour or meal. Our five kids took turns turning the extended handle on our Country Living Grain Mill. It took most of the day to grind and fill three one gallon zip loc bags. The novelty wore off rather quickly. But the main reason we purchased the motorized kit was to make sure the turn rate was consistant. Even I changed from a fast to slower turn rate over a period of an hour. I counted the turns periodically for the whole family and it went from around ninety RPMs to forty. I had to adjust the plate tension periodically because the spring would heat up when the RPMs were too high and change the gap distance between the plates. With the motor turning somwwhere around fifty RPMs the gap between the plates stays consistant. I really like the motor kit a lot. It also frees us up to spend more time doing other things in the kitchen.
Received Damaged
Ordered this for my parents to give to my brother. It arrived on time, however it was damaged - the cage was dented in and when the motor was turned on the fan blades hit against the cage and made a horrible sound. My brother took it apart and repaired the dent so the blades would not hit the cage and it ran okay. It was packed well so I can only assume it was sent defective from the company. What a disappointment to spend almost four hundred dollars and they don't even inspect their items prior to shipping. Item is good, but poor quality control.
